Foundation is without a doubt my favourite makeup item. A good base can make all the difference when you’re not looking your best and your skin needs a little help. Finding the right base for your skin type and tone can be so difficult though, there are so many options out there and it can all get a little overwhelming. I’m always on the lookout for something new that will give me that flawless base but so far, of the many, many foundations I’ve tried I have three “holy grail” favourites:
My number one foundation has to be the Illamasqua skin base foundation. This is hands down the best foundation I’ve ever tried and it’s the one I have in my makeup kit to use in clients. I find it works beautifully on all skin types, depending on the primer used with it you can alter the finish from ultra dewy to use on drier skin types, to a natural satin finish for oilier skins. I use this regularly and I find that even on my oily skin it lasts all day, I love this for when I’m working on a long haul flight because I know it will still look great even after a 16 hour shift. The coverage of this foundation is fantastic too, you only need the tiniest about buffed into the skin to give a beautiful sheer finish and you can build it all the way up to a full coverage in the areas you need it. Lastly, it photographs beautifully, no white face flash back and it makes the skin look radiant and airbrushed on camera. If you haven’t tried this already I urge you to go out and buy it, the colour range is fantastic so you’ll be sure to find one to suit.
Another favourite of mine is the Laura Mercier mineral powder. Even with my oily skin I usually hate powder foundations. Just because my skin is oily doesn’t mean I want my foundation to be flat and matte, I still want a shine and a glow to the skin, just slightly less shine around the nose and chin. With this powder you still get that glow and that’s why I love it. Even so I wouldn’t recommend this for a dry skin type because even though it’s not as dry looking as most powders it still might be a little uncomfortable for skins that need something to provide moisture all day. For normal, combination or oily skin though this is fantastic. As with the Illamasqua foundation you can alter the coverage of this base depending on how you apply it, I tend to use a big fluffy brush to apply a little all over the face and then go in with a smaller brush with more densely packed bristles to get more coverage where needed. If you’re going all out and want full, plastic, Barbie doll coverage you can use this as a setting powder over a liquid foundation.
Last and by no means least is the Bourjois healthy mix foundation. I’m so late to discover this one, people have been raving about this stuff for years and I can see why. This gives such a radiant finish without looking greasy and feels so comfortable to wear. It’s a great one for dry skin as it stays dewy all day, which is why I avoided trying it for so long as I thought it would be too greasy for me. This is absolutely not the case, so if you’re combination to oily and looking for a good drugstore foundation give this a go.
Despite these three amazing options I’ve just bought a new foundation to try, the new Makeup Forever Ultra HD stick. I’ve heard so many great reviews of this stuff so I can’t wait to try it, I’m flying back from LA tomorrow so I’ll put it to the ultimate test of a 16 hour flight!
As always thanks so much for reading and let me know any of your favourites because I’m always looking for something even better!
