I had a different post planned for today but I’m having one of those days (weeks) where I just feel a bit crap. Everyone has them so I thought why not put my misery to good use and try to snap out of it. So whether you’re feeling a bit sick or just a little down here are some makeup tips to help you look better, even if you don’t feel it.
The best tip I was ever given for when you’re feeling low is to just let yourself feel low. Allocate an amount of time to just “feel it”. The length of time I guess depends on what the issue is but maybe give yourself an hour to just cry it out, an afternoon in bed if you’re sick, whatever you need, but then after that time you have to get on with life as normal. It sounds a bit stupid but it’s better to give yourself that time instead of fighting back the tears all day or pushing yourself too hard. (I realise this first tip isn’t makeup related but it’s best to get the tears out of the way before we get anywhere near a mascara wand!)
So we’ve stopped moping and we’re ready to sort out the face. A few splashes of cold water on your face will wake you up and help with any puffiness around the eyes. Then give your face a good cleanse and moisturise. Use your favourite most luxurious products and really spoil yourself. I always like something with a nice scent to cheer me up. Take your time massaging your moisturiser into your skin as it will help get the blood flowing and make your skin look fresh and healthy. Don’t forget eye cream. I like a Orgins ginzing eye cream because it’s refreshing on the under eye area and will help with any inflammation from crying.
When you’re not feeling your best you’re going to want a base with a good amount of coverage to hide any redness or discoloration. For this I like Hourglass veil as it has great coverage without looking too heavy. It’s a hydrating foundation so it keeps your skin looking fresh and plump and prevents you from looking cakey. Same goes for concealer. You’ll want something light with high coverage like the trusty old Urban Decay naked skin concealer.
On days like these I like to keep eye makeup to a minimum. If you have a cold or have had a teary moment an intricate eye makeup is not going to last a minute so don’t bother. Go for a light skin-toned shadow all over the lid to open the eyes and make you look awake. Then lashes, lots of lashes. They’ll make your probably swollen eyes look more open and they add the glam factor, and I don’t know about you but that always makes me feel better. I love L’oreal waterproof volume million lashes mascara for this and some subtle falsies like these Eyelure Fleur Loves lashes.
Another great tip for the eyes is to use a nude coloured pencil on the water line. It will knock out any redness and make you look more awake. I love Rimmel scandal eyes as it’s inexpensive but beautifully pigmented.
Bronzer and blush will be your best friends today. Warming up your complexion will make you look more perky and less like you’re about to die. I love soleil bronze de Chanel. It’s a cream bronzer so it looks a lot more natural than a powder. Any peachy blush will be great for making you look more lively. Nars orgasm is a cult classic and beautiful on any skin tone.
Finally complete your look with a bright lip. Bright colours make everyone feel better so what better way to cheer yourself up? Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipstick in spicy is one of my faves, easy to wear and brightens the complexion.
And there you have it. You might still feel rubbish on the inside but at least you’ll look fabulous. Paint on a smile and take on the world and most of the time you’ll feel better tomorrow. Thanks for reading everyone!
