After watching loads of these Ride or Die tag videos on YouTube I really wanted to get in on the action. I absolutely love knowing what everyone has as their Holy Grail, can’t-live-without makeup products. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about I will leave a link to the original Jaclyn Hill video at the bottom of the post, but it’s basically just a list of all of your all time favourite makeup items. Your “ride or die”s A lot of mine will come as no surprise because I wax lyrical about them all the time on this blog, but I hope you enjoy anyway! I think it’s a great way to discover new products that really work. Unfortunately not all of them are cruelty free and as I mentioned here I’m trying to go cruelty free with all of my makeup from now on. So sadly once they run out I’ll be on the search for something just as good from a cruelty free brand, if you know of any suggestions please leave them in a comment, I’d be eternally grateful.
So let’s get started! My ride or die makeup products:
Primer – None
You all know the deal here, I really don’t believe in primers so I don’t have a favourite for this category. I’m still on the look out for an amazing primer that will smooth my skin, control my oil and keep my makeup on all day.
Foundation – Illamasqua Skin Base
Another predictable one! I’ve yet to find a foundation I love as much as this one for my skin type, and believe me I have tried A LOT of foundations. It lasts all day, it’s not so dewy that it makes me look even oilier but it’s not matte or drying at all. The coverage is great, you can build it into a very full coverage of you want or sheer it right down. I love using this on clients with a flat foundation brush to really sheer it out and then soften with a beauty blender, it gives the perfect amount coverage this way. It’s just such a beautiful foundation and it photographs like a dream.
Concealer – Urban Decay Naked Skin
Again I’ve spoken about this one before. I love it because it blends so beautifully but keeps its coverage. Great for under the eyes and highlighting and I love using a darker shade to contour.
Face powder – Laura Mercier Mineral Powder
This is actually a foundation in it’s own right so it offers amazing coverage. You can use it alone or over a liquid foundation for a plastic fantastic perfect face. I love it because even though it’s a powder it gives a glow to the skin and isn’t too matte.
Under Eye Setting Powder – RCMA No Colour Powder
I used to use the Laura Mercier translucent setting powder for this, which don’t get me wrong is amazing, but I recently discovered the RCMA alternative and it’s just as good for a fraction of the price. It is undetectable on the skin so great to set concealer or foundation because it will never get too cakey. Great for baking too if you’re going all out!
Brows – Anastasia Brow Wiz
I’ve been using the dip brow for a while now, so I’d almost forgotten how much I love the brow wiz. I tried it again the other day and it’s safe to say this pencil still has my heart. Taupe is the perfect blonde colour and the nib is thin and precise enough to fill the smallest of gaps.
Eyeshadow palette – Kat Von D La Vida Loca
This was the hardest one to chose because eyeshadow palettes are kind of my thing! But if I had to chose just one it would have to be this beauty. It has all the colours of the rainbow in it but also neutrals in the middle. I’m so sad that this was limited edition. Fantastic colours and amazing quality.
Eyeliner – Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper
Another win from Kat Von D! The only liner I’ve ever been able to create a satisfactory wing with. It’s easy to use and black as the night, what more could you ask from a liner?
Mascara – Mac Gigablack Extended Play
I’ve mentioned this one before too. This mascara is perfect, it builds length and volume, doesn’t transfer and most importantly the brush is small enough to actually fit near your eyes.
Lashes – Eyelure Fleur Loves
Another item that I’ve declared my undying love for in the past. I couldn’t wish for a more perfect lash if I had designed them myself. They’re not too big but not too small either. Three quarter length so super easy to apply. They flick out at the ends slightly to elongate the eye. Comfortable and subtle enough to wear everyday. I could go on…
Bronzer/contour – Tom Ford Bronzing Powder in Terra
As you can see from the image above this bronzer has had a lot of love. This is the product I’m the most sad that I won’t be able to repurchase due to it not being cruelty free. The colour is perfect for my skin tone, it’s not too dark or too orange. It doesn’t have any glitter or shimmer in it which is a big plus for me. It is a powder but it feels almost creamy so it applies so nicely to the skin and looks so natural. Also it’s huge so lasts forever and the mirror in it is amazing. It hurts my heart that when this is gone I can’t buy another. My wallet on the other hand is quite relieved because this stuff ain’t cheap.
Blush – Mac Warm Soul
Not much to say about this one, it’s just the best colour for when you don’t know what colour you want. Suits most skin tones and it’s so wearable.
Highlight – Champagne Pop
This highlight colour is just so beautiful. It’s different to any highlight colour I’ve seen before but it’s not a crazy out there blue or anything. Just a gorgeous peach toned glow and wearable enough for everyday. It can be piled on for a really popping in your face highlight or blended out for a subtle glow. Love this stuff!!
Lipstick – Mac Ruby Woo
If you have fair skin and orange tones don’t really suit you, then this is the red lipstick for you. It the most incredible, blue toned, old Hollywood glamour red. Yes it’s dry but because it is so matte it will last all day. When I first moved to Dubai as cabin crew this was the lipstick I would wear to work so it holds a lot of fond memories too. If I was only allowed to own one piece of makeup for the rest of my life this would be it. I love the name, I love the colour, I love the formula and I love how I feel when I wear it.
Liquid lip – Anastasia Beverly Hills Pure Hollywood
Since discovering liquid lipsticks a few years ago I find I rarely reach for a “normal” lipstick any more. Liquid lipsticks just last so much longer, and they don’t rub onto your teeth. The one I reach for the most is definitely pure Hollywood, it’s an easy to wear nude so perfect with any eye makeup.
Gloss – Tanya Burr
I’m really not a lipgloss kind of gal. I hate it when it’s windy and your hair gets stuck in it. I hate that it lasts about 5 minutes and then you have to reapply. I hate that it destroys all the good overlining work that you did and reveals your lips for the puney little lines that they really are. Having said that I do always have one in my handbag for lipstick emergencies. They’re easier to apply than a lipstick and you can do it without a mirror so sometimes a lipgloss is a necessary evil. I have a lot of the Tanya Burr lip glosses (in the old packaging) because they’re affordable and I quite like the formula. The colour range is great too. I don’t know if they’ve been reformulated since I bought mine but the old ones are great. I’d recommend if like me you don’t want to spend much money on lipgloss but still want a good quality product in a non-ridiculous colour.
Setting spray – Mac Fix+
I’ve yet to meet a setting spray I don’t like if I’m honest, but this one is my usual go to. The original and the best in my opinion. Smells great and makes a powdery face look like skin again. It can also be used with eyeshadows or pigments to add intensity.
Perfume – Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess
Smells like sun cream and coconuts and holidays. I love this perfume and I love that I love in a warm country so I can wear it all year round. I’ve been buying this perfume every year when it’s released for as long as I can remember.
Thanks for reading everyone! I hope that you got some good suggestions for new products to try. Let me know if any of you have done this tag because I’d love to read or watch it. And don’t forget to let me know of any cruelty free alternatives to any of the products mentioned.
