Hello Everyone! My blog is one whole year old today, so I wanted to put together a post in celebration. It seems crazy to me that a year has passed already, I still feel like a total newb to the blogging game! Having said that over the year I have picked up a few tips and pieces of advice that might help any of you guys who are new to blogging too.
You Don’t Have to be a Computer Whizz
One of the main reasons it took me so long to start a blog is that I’m terrible with computers. In fact technology in general is not a strength of mine, up until last week I didn’t know how to turn on the television in my own apartment. So if I can it, you can do it! Remember Google is your friend. Anything you don’t know how to do, google it. There are so many videos and YouTube tutorials out there to show you how to set up your blog, so start from there. Everything else you can learn as you go along. I’m still learning everyday when it comes to the layout of my blog and how to change things up, so don’t panic if you’re not sure.
Write About Something you Love
This one is probably a bit obvious but I still think it deserves a mention. Don’t start blogging because you want to get paid for it or sent free stuff because if you go in with that mindset, you never will. Of course that would be lovely, but to get there you need to passionate and knowledgeable about your chosen subject. I love makeup and spend all of my free time buying makeup, testing out new brands, applying it to myself and friends and so for me I would continue to write this blog even if nobody read it. If you don’t feel that way about your blog and you don’t enjoy it then you’ll never keep it up.
Give Yourself a Break
In total contrast to my last point you need to sometimes give yourself a rest. I like to plan ahead so I have blog posts ready to go up several times a week but sometimes that’s just not possible, and that’s ok. Sometimes I’m uninspired and have nothing I want to write about. When you feel like that don’t write anything. Like I mentioned earlier, if you’re blogging about something you love you’ll find that at another time you’ll be overflowing with ideas, so make the most of those times and write a few posts at once. My philosophy is to only blog whilst it’s still fun, if I ever stop enjoying it I simply won’t do it because after all it’s only a hobby.
Photographs are Key to a Successful Blog
The pictures you use on your blog are what make you stand out from the crowd. They need to be good quality. This is something I’ve only just started to realise myself and take more seriously. For me the photos are the most time consuming part about blogging. Don’t let this make you panic though, you don’t need any fancy equipment to get started. Later on as your blog grows you may want to invest in a good camera and what not, but to begin with the front camera on your phone will be just fine. There are also a lot of good apps that you can download that will help you edit your photos and make them more “blogworthy”. Some of my favourite photo editing apps are Facetune, VSCO, Snapseed and Canva.
After one year of blogging I think this is the most advice I’m qualified to give at the moment, I’m by no means an expert. Maybe next year I’ll have learned even more. If any of you are starting or have started a blog then please leave your link in the comments below so we can all help each other out. And let me know of any great tips you guys might have, like I mentioned I’m still learning and have so much about this blog that I’d like to improve upon.
Hope you’re all having a fantastic week and thanks for reading!
