Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Review

I promised this Dyson Supersonic review last week, but as usual life got in the way. But better late than never, right? So full disclaimer – I didn’t shell out $400 for a hairdryer. Luckily for me though my Mum did! She’s amazing at doing a proper blow dry – I’m talking better than most hairdressers – and she does it EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Yes you read that correctly, not only does she wash and dry her hair everyday but she gives it a full salon style blow out everyday too. So if anyone can justify the price of this hairdryer it’s her. Of course when I heard she had the Dyson Supersonic I was desperate to try it out, so that’s exactly what I did when I went home over Christmas.

Dyson Supersonic

I’ve got to admit when I first tried out this hairdryer I wasn’t impressed. My Mum doesn’t like it either – in fact it has been downgraded to the dog’s hairdryer now! That’s one extremely luxurious blow dry for a pooch! My opinion did change though after a few tries. I think it’ll be easier for me to explain how I felt about the Dyson Supersonic if I first tell you what its claims to do:

  • Dries hair faster
  • protects against heat damage and thus delivers shinier results than traditional driers
  • Gives sleek, smooth hair

So straight away I have to admit it does dry your hair faster than a normal hairdryer. Definitely. Having said that though, it’s still not exactly instantaneous so don’t get excited. The first time I used this I did a “rough dry”. So basically I flipped my head upside down whilst waving the Dyson Supersonic over the wet hair. It dried pretty quick. It also dried extremely frizzy! So as you can imagine I wasn’t impressed at all. I told my Mum I totally agreed with her and that maybe it wasn’t even good enough to be used on the dog. After a few days though I came to my senses I decided to give it another shot – I hadn’t really given it the fairest try. So after washing my hair I gave it another go. This time I used the correct nozzle, a round brush and dried the hair in sections. This time it was a lot smoother when I’d finished. I would point out that I don’t think it was any better or worse than the finish I would have achieved from a regular hairdryer though. I do like that it protects the hair from quite as much damage as a regular drier, so I think over time it would help with the condition of the hair.

Dyson Supersonic

So in regards to what Dyson claim of their supersonic drier I would say:

  • It definitely dries the hair faster than a standard hairdryer (and also a little quieter)
  • If used properly I noticed smooth and shiny results
  • If used for a quick blast it made my hair incredibly frizzy

I love the look of the Dyson Supersonic. It’s very modern and sleek-looking. I like the pop of hot pink too to keep it girly. It’s a really nice addition to your dressing table. It’s lighter than most other hair driers too, so much easier on your arms. It also comes with 3 different nozzles; a “styling concentrator”, a “smoothing nozzle” and a diffuser, so you’ve got options for any style or texture of hair. I really don’t have anything bad to say in regards to the packaging of the product – I was very impressed.

Dyson Supersonic

This is what’s got everyone talking about the Dyson Supersonic I think – the tear inducing price tag. At a hefty $399.99 or £299.99 this is quite the investment in hair care. So is it worth it?  I think it depends on how often you use a hairdryer to be honest! I rarely dry my hair, living in a hot country I like to let mine dry naturally because it doesn’t take long and it’s much better for my hair. However when I lived in the UK I used my hairdryer a lot more often because I couldn’t stand the cold. I think if this is something you would use daily it would be a great investment. It’ll cut down your drying time and over time be a lot better for your hair. It’s extremely expensive but if it lasts a good few years and you use it regularly then the cost per use is going to relatively low.

Have any of you guys tried this? Could you justify spending this much on a hairdryer or are you more like me and prefer to let your hair dry on its own? Leave your comments below, I’d love to know what you all think.

This is on my “ridiculous expensive” wish list. How damaging is it on your hair in relevance to a standard hair dryer?

    Great Post
