Top Tips For Surviving Valentine’s Day

So tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. The holiday (if we can call it that?) that seems to divide opinion more than any other. Love it or hate it though, the minute Christmas is over everything pink and heart-shaped is thrust upon us. There is no escaping it. So where do you fall? Are you a V day lover or hater?

Valentine's Day Makeup

Personally I like the idea of a day dedicated to celebrating love – whether it be romantic love, parental love, platonic love or even self-love. Love is an amazing thing so why not take a day to appreciate the special people in your life? Especially now when the whole world seems to be so full of hate – I think it’s really important to let your tribe know how much they mean to you.

And yes we should be doing this everyday – I know. We should be celebrating our mothers everyday too and I don’t see people kicking up such a stink about mother’s day – just sayin’. But I can appreciate why people aren’t a fan of the day. It seems a lot of people don’t use it to appreciate the ones around them but to show off about how many gifts they’re getting. Or how loved up they are (and how lonely you are *sobs*).

Well don’t panic – I got you single gals! I’ve spent my fair share (and it feels like several other people’s share) of February 14ths sat weeping into a tub of ice cream whilst watching Bridget Jones for the 87th time in a row. So to help you avoid spending tomorrow evening in an equally tragic state I’ve put together a little Valentine’s day survival guide. Some of it is even beauty related!

Top Tips To Survive Valentine’s Day

Treat Yourself

As the cliché goes “you need to love yourself first before you can truly love others”. So whether you’re in a relationship or not take the time to give yourself a little treat. Now I’m not saying go full Parks and Rec on me and purchase the latest Gucci handbag on a whim – as much as we’d all love to, Valentine’s Day is no excuse to bankrupt yourself. Just give yourself an extra little affection tomorrow. Whether it’s just a cake with your morning coffee, a face mask in the evening or treating yourself to a manicure.

What I’ll personally be doing is giving myself a DIY facial using these homemade, heart-shaped scrubs. The recipe is over on Ana’s blog 365beautytips. If you need a distraction from all the love in the air – distract yourself by whipping up a batch. If not they make awesome, heartfelt gifts!

Do Something You Love

If you’re feeling a bit down in the dumps/suicidal doing something you love will cheer you up and keep you away from the gin bottle. (Unless you love drinking gin, then I suggest you pick something else.) If you’re a beauty girl like me then give yourself a little pamper. Check out my DIY pamper post if you need a little inspiration.

If you’re in a relationship then do something you and your partner enjoy doing together. It’s easy to feel pressured into booking a romantic meal in a fancy restaurant but I don’t know about you, sitting in a cramped room full of strangers and paying through the nose for it isn’t my idea of a good time. So do something that you enjoy – if you love food (who doesn’t) why not cook something new together? Or take a cooking class as a couple. If you like animals volunteer together at your local animal shelter. Even if it’s something as simple as walking your dog together – it’s just nice to spend time with the ones you love and remember how lucky you are.

Make Something Personal

If you’re going to do the whole gift thing then why not make it something really personal. I absolutely love these handmade cards that Alifya shows us how to make in her blogpost. They’re great to give to friends, parents or any loved one. I even made one for my dog, you can see how disastrously it turned out in the picture below. But it was fun and sentimental (maybe not for the dog) and isn’t that the whole point of Valentine’s Day?

Don’t Spend It Alone

This is the most important one. If you don’t have a boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife who cares? There are still so many people in your life that love you, so spend it with them. You’ll feel so much better being around the people you love.

Get Glam!

Of course this one is my fave – this is a beauty blog after all! Nothing makes me feel better than looking my best. Even if I feel crappy on the inside if I look good it’s like an emotional suit of armour. You know how people say even if you fake smile you end up feeling better than if you didn’t smile at all? It’s the same thing. So slap on some makeup, blow dry your hair and pick out your best outfit.

I’ve created some Valentine’s makeup looks if you’re in need of some makeup inspiration.

I agree with you, love should be shared and expressed everyday, but it is always nice if you have someone to have a special day. I am single and am fed up with let downs and heartbreak, but am a romantic to the core. You are right though, us singles have to ride the wave of hearts and flowers!

    • Aww Julie I’ve been there and it’s so hard. I feel like a lot of the time people who are in a relationship seem to brush off how you are feeling like “you should enjoy being free and not having anyone else to worry about” or “there’s plenty more fish in the sea”, but it can be really hard and I think we need to remember that it’s ok to feel like that. Sending you and all the other single girls out there so much love xx
