If you’re reading this then my guess is you’re as much of a beauty addict as I am. And if you’re a beauty addict then the chances are you have a pretty huge makeup collection stashed over the years. Am I right? Of course I am! The only problem with that is how to use it all. How do we get the most out of our beloved beauty collection – we only have one face to put it on after all?
Well I may have solved this dilemma!
Here are my top tips for getting the most out of your makeup collection!
Shop Your Stash!
Recently I’ve got into the habit of “shopping my stash” every Saturday evening. (This sounds a little bit tragic but our working week starts on a Sunday here in Dubai, so Saturday evening is like a Sunday evening everywhere else in the world.) So every week I go through my makeup collection and pick items to add to my makeup bag for the week. I wear the items all week and then switch it up again the next Saturday. It’s a really great way of getting use out of items that otherwise would stay in the bottom of a drawer and be forgotten. Also it kind of feels like shopping – each week I get new items to play with and enjoy.
If this isn’t something you already do I urge you to try it.
Rotate Your Makeup Collection
In a similar vein to the last tip. A great way to make sure you’re using all of your products is to rotate them. Kind of how you would with your wardrobe. Take all of your dark burgundy lipsticks, heavy foundations and other more “winter appropriate” makeup items and store them in a cool, dry box during the summer. This will mean you only have access to your lighter, brighter summer-friendly makeup.
Now I know what you’re thinking – this sounds like the exact opposite of “getting the most out of your beauty collection” if you’re stowing it away for 6 months. But hear me out. The reason I personally love to do this is that when I get out my “winter” or “summer” makeup it’s like having new products all over again. It makes me really excited about the season ahead and it makes me actually use the product rather than have it sit gathering dust.
A lot of the time if you have too many options available it’s easy to become overwhelmed and just stick with the same 5 or 6 products. With this method it’s kind of like a capsule wardrobe for your makeup, you wear it all and really appreciate what you do have because you almost forget about it for the 6 months you’re not using it.
DIY Your Unwanted Makeup
So you’ve read the first two steps, you’ve started shopping your products every week and stowing away the out of season items but you STILL have certain products that you’re just not reaching for.
Sometimes you have those impulse buys, unwanted gifts or just really disappointing products that haven’t worked for you. Well before you get too disheartened there is still hope. A great tip for these products is to make them into something you do like. For example, it can be as simple as mixing a foundation that is too heavy with a little moisturizer to loosen it up. Voila – a tinted moisturizer that may be more suited to your skin type.
If you want to get a little more creative you can do something like this unicorn highlighter that I made last year – pretty cool right?
It was so much fun to do and it meant that I actually start to use some of the eyeshadows that had previously remained untouched.
Similarly, I made these adorable little Valentines day scrubs using soap and coconut oil. I’m sure you could easily use up some exfoliator or body scrub in the same way.
Donate or Give it Away
If you still have items that you just can’t see yourself using then disinfect and give them away! A lot of the time people don’t think to give away makeup because of the hygiene issue – which of course is a concern – but as long as the product is properly disinfected then you can easily donate it. You’ll feel a lot better doing that than you would if you threw it away – sharing is caring as they say.
